JERUSALEM: Hamas has reportedly warned Israel that it could launch another attack resembling the October 7, 2023, assault, prompting an urgent security briefing to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz, according to multiple Hebrew-language media reports.

The reported threat has heightened concerns within Israel’s security establishment over the possibility of renewed violence, as tensions persist over the future of Gaza, Hamas’s military capabilities and the implementation of the US-backed peace plan.

Hamas Message Reportedly Conveyed Through UN Official

According to the Israeli news outlet Ynet, senior Hamas figures delivered the message last week during a meeting with Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN humanitarian coordinator, at his office in the Gaza Strip. The group reportedly asked him to convey its position to Israel.

Alakbarov subsequently met with the Israeli military’s senior liaison official responsible for Palestinian affairs. The official then submitted an urgent report to Netanyahu and Defence Minister Katz, an excerpt of which was published by Channel 13 news.

In the reported assessment, Maj. Gen. Yoram Halevy, Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, said Hamas representatives had linked their growing dissatisfaction to Israeli military operations in Gaza, changes to the Yellow Line separating areas under Israeli military control from the remainder of the territory, and the Palestinian Authority’s decision to postpone elections.

According to the report, Hamas officials claimed that these developments were undermining the group’s control on the ground and warned that they would not accept the continuation of the current situation.

Reported Threat Extends Beyond Gaza

The Israeli military assessment described the message as unusually direct, warning that Hamas had expressed its readiness to carry out another attack similar to October 7 if circumstances permitted.

The reported warning also referred to potential operations against Israel, in the West Bank and abroad, raising broader concerns about the geographical scope of any future violence.

Israeli media quoted the assessment as describing the message as an exceptional threat that had not previously been communicated with such bluntness and directness.

The reported warning has prompted Israeli security officials to examine whether Hamas retains the operational capacity to mount another large-scale attack, particularly given the continued presence of Israeli forces in parts of the Gaza Strip.

Israeli Intelligence Monitors Possible Hamas Military Preparations

Ynet also reported that security briefings presented to Israel’s security cabinet indicated that Hamas had increased preparations for the possibility of renewed fighting. These alleged preparations reportedly include stockpiling weapons and moving them into civilian areas.

The reports suggest that Israeli officials are assessing both Hamas’s intentions and its practical ability to organise further attacks. However, the reported threat does not establish that a new assault is imminent, and its operational feasibility remains under examination.

Any renewed attack would carry serious risks for civilians and could trigger another major escalation across the region.

Gaza Peace Plan Faces Obstacles Over Disarmament and Israeli Withdrawal

The reported threat comes as implementation of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza faces significant obstacles. Hamas has reportedly resisted calls to disarm, while Israel has maintained that it will not withdraw its forces from areas of Gaza under its control until the disarmament condition is fulfilled.

The dispute has left key questions unresolved regarding Gaza’s future security arrangements, governance and the prospects for a lasting ceasefire.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces continue to conduct strikes against individuals they describe as militants preparing imminent attacks. Israeli forces have also reportedly expanded the territory under their control by moving the Yellow Line westward.

Security Challenges Threaten Prospects for Lasting Peace

The reported Hamas warning underscores the fragile security environment surrounding Gaza and the difficulties facing international efforts to prevent a return to large-scale hostilities.

For Israel, preventing another attack on the scale of October 7 remains a central security concern. For civilians in Gaza and the wider region, renewed fighting could bring further displacement, casualties and disruption to humanitarian assistance.

The latest reports highlight the urgent need for effective security arrangements, credible monitoring mechanisms and sustained diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation and create conditions for a more durable peace.
