- No Injuries Reported as Police Investigate Attack on Rahma Islamic Centre
MONTREAL, Canada: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has strongly condemned a shooting targeting an Islamic centre in Winnipeg, describing the incident as an “appalling” act of Islamophobia and pledging full government support for the investigation.
No one was injured in the attack, which took place late Wednesday night at the Rahma Islamic Centre in Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba province.
“This violent act of Islamophobia is appalling and has no place in Canada. I’m grateful no one was injured,” Carney said in a statement posted on X.
He added that law enforcement agencies had his “full support” as they worked to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) said that the incident occurred while members of the community were gathered inside the centre. According to the council, individuals reportedly fired shots at the building from a vehicle before attacking the centre with a blunt weapon.
“This is yet another example of what has been literal daily occurrences of similar incidents across the country,” the council said, warning that Islamophobic violence was occurring at an alarming rate and was “quickly becoming a new norm in Canada.”
Winnipeg police are leading the investigation. Authorities have not yet identified any suspects or announced any arrests.
The incident has renewed concerns among Canada’s Muslim community over the safety of Islamic institutions and the growing threat of Islamophobic violence.
