At least one dead and five wounded in a shooting attack on a highway near Jerusalem

One person was killed and five were injured this Thursday in a shooting attack on a road that connects an Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank with Jerusalem.

Official sources have reported that “a report was received about a terrorist attack with shooting on Highway 1” near Maale Adumim, an Israeli settlement located in the West Bank about 10 kilometers from Jerusalem.

The Police have specified in a statement that three Palestinians from the West Bank city of Bethlehem arrived in vehicles on Highway 1 towards Jerusalem, and “began firing M-16 automatic weapons at civilians who were in their cars, in the middle of a traffic jam.” near the Azaim checkpoint.”

“Two terrorists were neutralized by civilians and security forces at the scene, while the third was reached by agents when he tried to escape,” the note adds.

When consulted by Media, the Police have not confirmed whether the attackers are dead.

Spiral of violence in the West Bank

This is the second attack against civilians in Israel in a week.

Last Friday, two people were killed and four others injured when a gunman opened fire on a group of people at a bus stop. Also then, the aggressor was killed by a civilian at the same scene.

Israel and the occupied West Bank are experiencing the worst spiral of violence since the Second Intifada (2000-2005), following the war between the Islamist group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, and Israel.

So far this year alone, 72 Palestinians have died in the area in violent events, as well as seven people on the Israeli side.

Israel resumes fighting in Gaza

In Gaza City, the Israeli Army has resumed fighting and on the last day attacked a dozen Hamas targets in the Zaytun neighborhood, destroying “terrorist infrastructure” and killing around twenty alleged fighters of the Islamist militias.

Air and ground forces attacked a dozen “targets from which targeted attacks against Israeli troops were carried out” in Zaytun, and “destroyed several terrorist infrastructures and killed approximately 20 terrorists” according to a military statement.

While the troops resume their offensive in Gaza City and other points in the north of the Strip, from where their forces had largely withdrawn since December, the Israeli Army maintains its operations in Khan Younis, a Hamas stronghold in the south of the enclave. .

The heaviest fighting since December has been concentrated in this city, although Israel assures that the Hamas brigade in Khan Younis has already been defeated and only residual forces remain.

Additionally, the Israeli Navy attacked and destroyed several ships belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad in southern Gaza;

In the center of the Strip, troops “located and destroyed” an explosives launching position.

More than 29,300 Gazans have died in 139 days of war in the Gaza Strip, where an estimated 8,000 bodies are under the rubble of buildings destroyed in multiple Israeli attacks.
