- Wilson Praises President Trump’s Position and Highlights Morocco’s Role in Regional Peace and Stability
RABAT: US Congressman Joe Wilson on Monday reaffirmed his support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, praising President Donald Trump’s position on the issue and highlighting what he described as Morocco’s important role in promoting peace and stability in Africa.
Wilson made the remarks following a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Republican congressman, who chairs the Congressional Morocco Caucus, praised President Trump’s leadership in support of Morocco’s position on the Sahara and linked the territory’s status to broader regional peace, stability and prosperity.
“The very concept of peace, stability and prosperity is indeed sovereignty by Morocco over the Sahara,” Wilson said.
Wilson also expressed appreciation for the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Morocco’s contribution to stability across Africa, particularly in North Africa.
“We are very grateful to His Majesty the King,” Wilson told reporters following his meeting with Bourita.
He said the United States attaches significant importance to Morocco’s role in advancing peace and stability across the continent, while also praising the Kingdom’s progress in economic development and defense.
Strong Morocco-US Partnership
Wilson further emphasized the longstanding ties between Morocco and the United States, recalling Morocco’s historic recognition of American independence.
“We so much admire Morocco,” he said, noting that Morocco was the first country to recognize the independence of the United States.
The meeting between Wilson and Bourita comes as Morocco continues its diplomatic engagement at the United Nations over the Western Sahara issue, while Washington continues to emphasize its support for Morocco’s sovereignty and the broader strategic partnership between the two countries.
