RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazil’s incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won re-election for a fourth presidential term, defeating right-wing opposition candidate Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in the second round of voting, according to the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

With 97.69% of ballots counted, Lula secured 51.74% of the vote, compared with 48.26% for Bolsonaro, the electoral authority reported.

Historic Electoral Comeback

Lula’s victory marks a significant milestone in contemporary Brazilian electoral history. According to the report, he became the first politician in the country’s modern history to win a presidential election after finishing behind his rival in the first round of voting.

The president-elect is scheduled to assume office on January 1, 2027, beginning his fourth presidential term.

Voter Turnout and Ballot Statistics

The runoff recorded a voter turnout of 80.79%, with 127,807,732 citizens participating in the election. The abstention rate stood at 19.21%, representing 30,081,854 registered voters who did not cast ballots.
