  • Ottawa Endorses Moroccan Proposal as Credible Basis for Political Resolution

Ottawa – Canada has reaffirmed its recognition of Morocco’s autonomy plan as a constructive basis for achieving a mutually acceptable solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

The position was outlined in an official statement released Tuesday by Global Affairs Canada following a telephone conversation between Anita Indira Anand and Nasser Bourita.

Recognition of Morocco’s Strategic Priority

The Canadian statement acknowledged the importance of the Sahara issue to Morocco and noted the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.

Ottawa indicated that its future actions will be aligned accordingly, reflecting growing diplomatic engagement and recognition of international efforts to advance a realistic and sustainable settlement.

Morocco’s Autonomy Plan Described as Serious and Credible

Reaffirming support for a peaceful resolution, Canada emphasized the need for a lasting, just, and mutually acceptable political settlement in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.

The statement described Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a serious and credible proposal capable of contributing to a fair and durable resolution of the long-standing dispute.

Strengthening Morocco-Canada Strategic Relations

The development comes ahead of an upcoming official visit to Morocco by Minister Anand in the coming weeks. The visit is expected to further enhance bilateral cooperation and deepen discussions on regional and strategic issues, including the Sahara dossier.

Canada’s renewed position adds to growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, reinforcing Rabat’s diplomatic momentum and its commitment to a pragmatic political solution under Moroccan sovereignty.

This latest step also highlights the strengthening partnership between Canada and Morocco, founded on mutual respect, shared interests, and expanding cooperation across political and economic sectors.
