- Vienna Reaffirms Support for a Realistic and Lasting Political Solution
Austria expressed on Wednesday its support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), affirming that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could represent the most feasible pathway toward resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
The position was outlined in a joint communiqué issued following high-level talks in Vienna between Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria, and Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, who is on an official working visit to Austria.
Support for UN-Led Political Process
In the communiqué, Austria welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2797, which fully supports the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations aimed at reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political settlement.
The resolution recognises Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a serious and credible basis for advancing the UN-led political process and encourages continued dialogue among all concerned parties.
Recognition of Morocco’s Constructive Engagement
Austria also welcomed Morocco’s readiness to further clarify the practical framework of genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, reflecting Rabat’s constructive and solution-oriented approach to the issue.
This acknowledgment highlights growing international confidence in Morocco’s commitment to stability, dialogue, and regional cooperation.
Expanding International Momentum in Support of Morocco
Austria’s strengthened position adds to the increasing international momentum in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and backing for the Autonomy Initiative, led under the vision of King Mohammed VI.
