- Boulos Highlights Washington’s Backing for Lasting and Mutually Acceptable Settlement
RABAT: US Senior Adviser Massad Boulos has reaffirmed Washington’s support for a lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the Western Sahara dispute following talks with senior United Nations official Rosemary DiCarlo.
Boulos, a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, said his discussions with DiCarlo focused on the Western Sahara issue, Libya and Sudan, as well as broader efforts to promote peace and stability across North Africa and the wider region.
“On Western Sahara, we emphasized the need to advance a lasting and mutually acceptable resolution consistent with UN Security Council Resolution 2797,” Boulos said in a post on X.
Morocco’s Autonomy Plan Gains Diplomatic Momentum
The latest US position comes as Morocco’s diplomatic efforts concerning Western Sahara continue to gain momentum, with an increasing number of countries expressing support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a framework for resolving the decades-old dispute.
Rabat regards the Autonomy Plan as the most credible and pragmatic basis for achieving a political settlement. Morocco has consistently maintained that the initiative provides a realistic framework for resolving the dispute within the United Nations-led political process.
Washington Maintains Recognition of Moroccan Sovereignty
The United States has repeatedly expressed support for Morocco’s position on Western Sahara. In December 2020, the Trump administration formally recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the territory and described Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the basis for a “just, lasting, and mutually acceptable” solution.
Washington has maintained its recognition of Moroccan sovereignty while continuing to emphasize the importance of a UN-led political process aimed at achieving a durable settlement.
US Highlights Political Challenges in Libya
Boulos and DiCarlo also discussed the situation in Libya, with the US official underscoring the importance of advancing unified political, security and economic institutions.
Washington has continued to support efforts aimed at strengthening Libya’s national institutions and encouraging a political process capable of promoting long-term stability and unity.
Urgent Call for Humanitarian Truce in Sudan
The Sudan conflict was another major issue addressed during the meeting. Boulos stressed the urgent need for a humanitarian truce to facilitate safe and unhindered access for humanitarian assistance amid the country’s continuing crisis.
“The United States continues to partner with the United Nations to advance peace and stability across the region,” Boulos said.
Washington-UN Coordination on Regional Stability
The meeting underscores continued US engagement with the United Nations on some of North Africa and the wider region’s most pressing political, security and humanitarian challenges.
The discussions on Western Sahara, Libya and Sudan highlight Washington’s stated commitment to diplomatic engagement, regional stability and UN-supported political processes aimed at achieving sustainable solutions to protracted conflicts.
