- Initiative Aims to Expand Private-Sector Investment and Support Syria’s Post-War Economic Recovery
DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates and Syria have officially reactivated their Joint Business Council as part of a renewed effort to strengthen economic cooperation, encourage private-sector investment, and contribute to Syria’s post-war reconstruction and economic recovery.
The announcement followed high-level talks in Abu Dhabi between UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi and Syrian Minister of Economy and Industry Mohammed Nidal Al-Shaar, during which both sides explored ways to expand bilateral trade, investment, and commercial partnerships.
Platform to Strengthen Private-Sector Partnerships
The restructured UAE-Syria Business Council will serve as a strategic platform to connect business leaders, investors, and entrepreneurs from both countries. It aims to facilitate cooperation across key sectors, including infrastructure, manufacturing, logistics, energy, agriculture, technology, and financial services, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Speaking on the initiative, Al-Zeyoudi said the council’s reactivation reflects the shared commitment of both governments to restoring economic relations and unlocking new opportunities for sustainable growth.
“The reactivation of the UAE-Syria Business Council reflects the sincere desire of both countries to restore trade and investment relations to their full potential,” he said.
He added that the council will develop a comprehensive roadmap to deepen collaboration between the private sectors of the two countries and further elevate bilateral economic ties.
Syria Positioned as Regional Trade and Logistics Hub
Al-Zeyoudi highlighted Syria’s strategic geographic location, noting that future joint investment projects could reinforce the country’s role as a regional logistics and trade gateway linking the Mediterranean region with global markets.
He emphasized that enhanced economic cooperation would contribute to long-term regional connectivity while supporting Syria’s economic revival.
New Leadership Appointed to Joint Council
The Federation of UAE Chambers of Commerce and Industry announced the formation of a new Emirati delegation to lead the Joint Business Council. Prominent businessman Essa Abdullah Al-Ghurair has been appointed Chairman, while Yahya Lootah will serve as Vice Chairman.
Humaid Mohammed Bin Salem, Secretary-General of the Federation, said the council will foster direct engagement between business communities, facilitate investment partnerships, and create new opportunities for trade and commercial cooperation.
Part of Broader Regional Economic Re-engagement
The relaunch of the council comes as several Gulf nations continue to restore diplomatic and economic relations with Damascus following the establishment of Syria’s transitional authorities after the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, ending nearly 14 years of civil conflict.
Regional governments and international financial institutions have since intensified efforts to support Syria’s reconstruction, economic stabilization, and reintegration into regional markets.
Reconstruction Needs Estimated at $216 Billion
According to World Bank estimates, rebuilding Syria’s war-damaged infrastructure, industrial capacity, and public services will require approximately $216 billion, underscoring the significant investment opportunities and international cooperation needed to support the country’s long-term recovery.
