- Pakistan Strongly Condemns Reported Houthi Attacks on Saudi Arabia, Calls for Protection of Islam’s Holiest Sites
UNITED NATIONS: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told world leaders at the United Nations on Friday that any further attacks threatening the safety and sanctity of Makkah would constitute a “red line” for Pakistan, while strongly condemning recent Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia.
Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York, Prime Minister Sharif said Pakistan condemned “in the strongest possible terms” the recent attacks targeting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He expressed particular concern over a reported attempted drone attack on the holy city of Makkah Al-Mukarramah, saying the incident had caused deep outrage among Muslims around the world.
“Any threat to the safety and sanctity” of Makkah is a red line that must never be crossed, the Prime Minister said, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Islam’s holiest sites.
“No Muslim can even dare to think of committing such a heinous act,” he added.
Saudi authorities said last week that the Houthis had targeted Makkah with a drone for the first time since 2017, but that the drone was intercepted and brought down.
Saudi Arabia also intercepted Houthi ballistic missiles on Thursday following warnings issued for several regions, including Makkah.
The latest incidents come amid a renewed escalation in the Yemen conflict. Houthi attacks have intensified since July, when renewed hostilities disrupted a years-long truce and increasingly linked the Yemen conflict to the broader instability and military confrontation across the Middle East.
