- US Vice President Expresses Cautious Optimism Ahead of Trump-Zelensky Meeting
WASHINGTON: US Vice President JD Vance has described the conflict in Ukraine as one of the most difficult international crises to resolve, while expressing optimism that further diplomatic engagement could lead to progress.
Vance said US President Donald Trump had characterized the Russia-Ukraine conflict as particularly challenging compared with other international disputes.
“The president has said the Russia-Ukraine war has been by far the toughest of the international conflicts to solve,” Vance told reporters.
Acknowledging the complexity of the conflict, Vance said efforts to achieve a resolution had proved difficult but stressed the importance of continued diplomatic engagement.
“This thing has been tough to solve, no doubt about it. But I’d rather work for a president who has energetically tried to solve the problem,” he said. Vance also pointed to the scheduled September 22 contact between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a potential opportunity for diplomatic progress.
“I’m always optimistic that we’re going to make progress,” Vance said, indicating that Washington remained hopeful about advancing efforts toward a resolution of the conflict.
The comments come as diplomatic efforts continue over the Russia-Ukraine war, with international attention focused on possible avenues for negotiations and a potential end to the fighting.
