WASHINGTON / NEW YORK, November 3 — The United States military has reportedly carried out a strike on Iran’s Qeshm Island, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Monday, citing unnamed US administration officials, amid continuing diplomatic efforts to bring the conflict between Washington and Tehran to an end.
According to the newspaper, the strike was part of a series of limited military operations that the United States has allegedly conducted against Iran in recent weeks. The officials reportedly characterised the attacks as defensive in nature.
The report added that Washington has deliberately kept the operations out of the public spotlight to avoid creating the impression that it intends to resume full-scale military hostilities against Iran.
Trump Signals No Immediate Military Escalation
US President Donald Trump said earlier on Monday that he did not intend to resume military action against Iran immediately after the November 3 congressional midterm elections.
Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance said that some progress had been made in consultations between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the conflict, suggesting that diplomatic engagement remained a possible avenue for de-escalation.
The reported strike comes at a sensitive moment, as Washington weighs its military posture against ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent a renewed escalation across the region.
Strait of Hormuz Remains a Strategic Flashpoint
The conflict has placed renewed attention on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime routes for energy supplies. Approximately one-quarter of global oil trade and around one-fifth of liquefied natural gas trade pass through the waterway, making any disruption a significant concern for international energy markets and global economic stability.
Disagreements over maritime security and the terms of previous arrangements have remained central to tensions between Washington and Tehran.
From Military Confrontation to Economic Pressure
The United States and Israel began military operations against Iran on February 28, according to the timeline outlined in the report. Washington and Tehran subsequently reached a memorandum of understanding in June that provided for an immediate cessation of hostilities across multiple fronts, including Lebanon.
However, the report states that the United States resumed large-scale strikes against Iran overnight on July 8, accusing Tehran of violating the agreement’s provisions concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
Washington subsequently appeared to move away from sustained large-scale military operations, placing greater emphasis on economic pressure and sanctions designed to constrain Iran’s resources and strategic capabilities.
Diplomatic Prospects Remain Uncertain
The reported strike on Qeshm Island underscores the fragile nature of the situation, with limited military action continuing alongside indications of diplomatic progress.
Whether the latest developments will undermine negotiations or encourage renewed efforts to secure a lasting cessation of hostilities remains uncertain. For regional governments and international energy markets, the immediate priority remains preventing further escalation and safeguarding the security of vital maritime routes.
