- CENTCOM says vessels were targeted following reported Iranian missile attacks on a US Navy warship
NEW YORK: The United States military has reported the destruction of five Iranian crude oil tankers in separate operations, citing escalating tensions with Iran and recent attacks involving the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
In a statement, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces destroyed five Iranian oil carriers on September 8, following what it described as two ballistic missile attacks by the IRGC against a US Navy warship over the preceding two days.
According to CENTCOM, the vessels targeted were M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, and M/T Riesco, which it said were destroyed in the Gulf of Oman. A fifth vessel, M/T Derya, was reportedly targeted near Iran’s Kharg Island.
CENTCOM further stated that its forces had destroyed three additional Iranian crude oil carriers on September 5, bringing the total number of vessels it says were destroyed in the reported operations to eight.
The US military did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the attacks or the extent of damage caused to the vessels. The claims could not immediately be independently verified.
