RABAT: Guinea-Bissau has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over all its territories, including the Sahara region, during high-level talks held in Rabat on Monday.

The reaffirmation came from Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Communities, Fatumata Jau, following discussions with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

Bissau Endorses Morocco’s Autonomy Plan

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Jau reiterated her country’s full backing for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing it as the sole credible and realistic framework for resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara.

She stressed that Guinea-Bissau remains committed to supporting Morocco’s efforts to achieve a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution through the autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty.

Dakhla Consulate Reflects Growing Bilateral Partnership

The minister also highlighted Guinea-Bissau’s decision to open a Consulate General in Dakhla in October 2020, describing the move as a testament to the strong and enduring partnership between the two brotherly nations.

According to Jau, the diplomatic presence in Dakhla aligns with the growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative and its sovereignty over the Sahara, a momentum led by Mohammed VI.

Support Expressed for UN Security Council Resolution

Jau further welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, noting that it reinforces the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the foundation for achieving a fair, durable, and mutually acceptable settlement to the dispute.

The visit and statements underscore the strengthening diplomatic ties between Morocco and Guinea-Bissau, as well as continued African support for Rabat’s position on the Sahara issue.
