- Baghdad Open to Facilitating Dialogue Subject to Agreement by Both Sides
MOSCOW: Iraq remains willing to host negotiations between the United States and Iran if both parties agree, Iraqi Ambassador to Russia Dr. Abdul-Karim Hashim Mostafa said in remarks to TASS.
The ambassador noted that Iraq has previously played a mediating role in efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran and stands ready to do so again if requested.
“In 2014, Iraq hosted the first indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran. Iraq is always prepared to undertake such a role, but this ultimately depends on the willingness and agreement of both partners, the United States and Iran,” he said.
Iraq Reaffirms Commitment to Regional Dialogue and Mediation
Hashim Mostafa emphasized Baghdad’s longstanding commitment to promoting dialogue and diplomatic solutions to regional disputes, highlighting Iraq’s position as a bridge for communication among neighboring countries and international partners.
He stressed that any future mediation efforts would require the consent and cooperation of all parties involved.
Ambassador Says Regional Tensions Have Had Limited Impact on Daily Life in Iraq
Commenting on the recent tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, the Iraqi envoy said the developments had not significantly affected the daily lives of ordinary Iraqis.
“Unfortunately, many Israeli missiles directed toward Iran passed through not only Iraqi airspace, but also Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian, and other regional airspaces. Only a limited number of countries possess the technical capabilities to intercept or counter such projectiles,” Hashim Mostafa said.
The ambassador’s remarks underscore Iraq’s continued efforts to support regional stability and diplomatic engagement amid ongoing geopolitical challenges in the Middle East.
