- Bamako Joint Communiqué Hails UN Process and Describes Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative as the “Only Credible and Realistic Solution”
BAMAKO: The Republic of Mali has reaffirmed its firm support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region, while endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the “only credible and realistic solution” to the regional dispute.
The position was reaffirmed in a Joint Communiqué issued at the conclusion of the 4th High-Level Joint Commission on Morocco-Mali Cooperation, held in Bamako from July 21 to 24.
The meeting was co-chaired by Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, and Abdoulaye Diop, Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
According to the communiqué, Mali reiterated its support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy, as well as for the Autonomy Plan submitted by Morocco, which Bamako considers the “only credible and realistic solution” for resolving the regional dispute.
Mali’s position was explicitly linked to UN Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025, which provides the framework for the ongoing UN-led political process aimed at reaching a mutually acceptable and lasting settlement.
The latest declaration further consolidates Bamako’s diplomatic position following the Malian government’s statement of April 10, 2026, announcing its official withdrawal of recognition of the separatist entity known as the Polisario Front.
The 4th session of the Morocco-Mali Joint Cooperation Commission also underscored the strengthening of bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries across areas of mutual interest.
The renewed Malian support represents another significant diplomatic endorsement of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan and reflects growing regional backing for a political settlement based on Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
