North Macedonia Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as Only Solution to Western Sahara Dispute

RABAT – In a significant diplomatic development, the Republic of North Macedonia has officially declared its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the sole basis for resolving the Western Sahara dispute. This clear and principled position was outlined in a Joint Statement signed by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his North Macedonian counterpart, Timčo Mucunski, following their high-level meeting in Skopje on Monday.

Mucunski reaffirmed his country’s firm backing of the UN-led process aimed at achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution. The statement emphasizes the two nations’ shared commitment to the leadership of the United Nations in advancing the peace process.

Both sides expressed strong support for UN Security Council Resolution 2756 (adopted in October 2024), which underscores the need for realism, compromise, and the central role of the concerned parties in reaching a sustainable solution. The statement also reiterates support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to accelerate progress toward a diplomatic resolution in line with the UN Charter.

This firm stance by North Macedonia adds to the growing wave of international endorsement for the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco in 2007—an initiative that enjoys wide backing from global powers and reflects the forward-thinking vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

The move marks another milestone in Morocco’s diplomatic success and underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to peace, regional stability, and constructive international cooperation.
