RABAT – France has reaffirmed its strong support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region, emphasizing that the “present and future” of the territory lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty and outlining concrete measures to implement this position on the ground.

The position was reiterated on Wednesday in Rabat by Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, during a joint press briefing following talks with Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.

France Reaffirms Strategic Support for Moroccan Sovereignty

Highlighting the strategic importance of the Sahara issue for both France and regional stability, Barrot recalled the position expressed by French President Emmanuel Macron in his letter to King Mohammed VI dated July 30, 2024.

“In line with the position expressed by President Emmanuel Macron, the present and future of this territory lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,” Barrot stated.

The French foreign minister reaffirmed France’s backing for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing it as “the only basis for a just, lasting and negotiated political solution” to the regional dispute.

France Welcomes UN Resolution and Renewed Political Momentum

Barrot further noted that United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 aligns with this approach and contributes to strengthening the current diplomatic momentum surrounding the issue.

He welcomed the resumption of direct discussions among all stakeholders based on the Moroccan autonomy plan and praised ongoing international efforts aimed at reaching a lasting political settlement.

The French minister emphasized that France views the autonomy initiative as a realistic and credible framework capable of promoting regional stability, development, and cooperation.

France Expands Presence in Morocco’s Southern Provinces

Outlining the practical steps taken by France in support of its position, Barrot announced that Paris has expanded its diplomatic, cultural, and economic engagement in the Sahara region.

These measures include the opening of a visa application center, the establishment of an Alliance Française branch in Laayoune, and the inauguration of a new educational institution aimed at strengthening cultural and educational cooperation.

Growing French Investment and Development Support

On the economic front, Barrot highlighted the increasing involvement of French companies in investment projects across the Sahara region.

He also pointed to the role of the French Development Agency and other French operators in supporting development initiatives and infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing economic growth and social progress in Morocco’s southern provinces.

The visit and high-level discussions reflected the strengthening strategic partnership between France and Morocco, particularly in areas of diplomacy, economic cooperation, cultural exchange, and regional stability.
