BEIJING: Chinese authorities have launched a search and rescue operation for 23 people who remain missing after a Vietnamese cargo vessel carrying 62 crew members sank in the South China Sea, Chinese state media reported Sunday.
The vessel, Khoi Nguyen 18, encountered difficulties in waters near Yongshu Reef, also known as Fiery Cross Reef, before sinking, according to China’s state broadcaster CCTV.
Rescue teams have so far recovered and rescued 39 people, while efforts are continuing to locate the remaining crew members.
Authorities have deployed rescue resources to the area as the search operation continues. Further details regarding the circumstances that caused the vessel to sink and the condition of those rescued were not immediately available.
