- Foreign ministers discuss implementation of joint defence framework, security of Saudi Arabia and regional stability
RIYADH: Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud held talks with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan as part of ongoing efforts to advance cooperation under the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement.
The meeting focused on progress towards establishing the agreement’s General Secretariat, specialized committees and working groups, as well as preparations for launching their respective activities.
Ministers Condemn Attacks on Saudi Arabia
The three foreign ministers strongly condemned attacks targeting Makkah and civilian and economic facilities in Saudi Arabia.
They commended the vigilance and readiness of the Saudi armed forces and their efforts to safeguard the Kingdom’s security and territorial integrity. The ministers also affirmed Saudi Arabia’s right to take measures it deems necessary to defend its security and sovereignty in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which recognizes the inherent right of individual and collective self-defence.
Chiefs of Staff Meeting to Be Convened
The ministers also discussed arrangements for an urgent meeting of the chiefs of staff of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye to examine practical measures for supporting Saudi Arabia under the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement.
The agreement establishes the principle that aggression against one party constitutes an attack against all parties, providing a framework for coordinated responses to threats against any of the participating states.
Emphasis on Sovereignty and Maritime Security
During the discussions, the ministers exchanged views on the evolving regional situation and underscored the importance of respect for international law, good-neighborly relations, state sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
They further stressed the importance of safeguarding the security and freedom of maritime navigation, emphasizing the need for stability along vital regional waterways and protection of international shipping.
Commitment to Regional Peace and Stability
The three ministers reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sustainable peace, security and stability across the region, while supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and addressing ongoing crises through peaceful means.
The meeting underscored the growing emphasis on coordination among Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye on regional security matters and on translating the Makkah Joint Defense Agreement into practical institutional mechanisms for cooperation.
