- Interior Minister Says Structural Reforms Needed to Break Decades-Long Cycle of Governance Failures
ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has called for an across-the-board political dialogue to reform Pakistan’s governance system, warning that the existing structure is no longer capable of effectively addressing the country’s growing challenges.
Speaking at the Pakistan Economic Summit, Naqvi said all political parties should sit together to agree on major structural reforms, including the creation of new provinces and administrative units.
‘System Has Collapsed’
Naqvi described the existing governance framework as having “collapsed” and said cosmetic measures would not resolve Pakistan’s problems.
He argued that structural reforms were necessary within the framework of democracy, particularly to improve the delivery of basic public services, strengthen merit and create employment opportunities for young people.
The minister also criticized the country’s growing dependence on borrowing, questioning whether successive governments could continue adding to the national debt without addressing underlying structural weaknesses.
Youth Need Jobs, Justice and Merit
Naqvi said Pakistan’s young population could not be satisfied merely through stipends or distribution of laptops, stressing that young people primarily seek justice, merit and meaningful employment opportunities.
He warned that failure to address their aspirations could have serious consequences and called for a fundamental change in national priorities.
Zardari, Naqvi Review Security Situation
Separately, President Asif Ali Zardari and Interior Minister Naqvi held a meeting at Bilawal House to review the country’s overall law and order situation, with particular focus on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
Naqvi briefed the president on security conditions in both provinces and ongoing efforts to combat terrorism.
President Zardari paid tribute to the Pakistan Armed Forces, law enforcement agencies and police for their courage, professionalism and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.
He said the nation remained firmly behind the country’s security forces in the collective effort to eliminate terrorism and establish lasting peace.
The meeting also covered the prevailing political situation and other matters of national importance.
