RABAT: Morocco has secured a seat on the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2027–2029 term after receiving an overwhelming 178 votes out of 187 during elections held at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The victory highlights Morocco’s growing role in international diplomacy and reflects its continued commitment to multilateralism, global cooperation, and constructive dialogue within the United Nations system.
ECOSOC, one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, plays a central role in coordinating international efforts on economic, social, cultural, and development issues. The council also oversees the implementation of major UN conferences and global development initiatives.
Key platforms under ECOSOC include the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), the Humanitarian Affairs Segment (HAS), and the Financing for Development Forum (FfD).
Following its election, Morocco reaffirmed the importance of ECOSOC in addressing complex global challenges and advancing sustainable development efforts. The Kingdom emphasized that the council remains a vital mechanism for strengthening the UN development system and accelerating progress toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Morocco pledged to actively contribute to ECOSOC’s work, focusing on sustainable development, UN development system reforms, financing for development, and strengthening South-South and triangular cooperation.
The election further reinforces Morocco’s expanding presence in key international institutions, reflecting its strategic engagement in global affairs.
Earlier this week, Morocco also secured its first seat at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, scheduled to open in September, following a selection process conducted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
