- Joint Declaration Signals Stronger Diplomatic, Economic, and Consular Engagement in the Region
The Czech Republic has formally expressed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the most practical pathway toward resolving the long-standing dispute over the Sahara. In a significant diplomatic development, Prague stated that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty constitutes the most feasible solution,” underscoring its intention to align future actions with this position.
This stance was articulated in a Joint Declaration signed in Rabat following high-level talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Petr Macinka, who is undertaking his first official visit to the Kingdom.
Expanding Diplomatic and Economic Engagement
The declaration outlines a series of concrete steps reflecting the Czech Republic’s commitment to strengthening ties with Morocco, particularly in the Sahara region. Notably, the Czech Ambassador to Morocco is expected to visit the region to facilitate upcoming delegations of Czech entrepreneurs and to promote joint economic ventures.
In a further sign of deepening engagement, the Czech Embassy in Rabat will extend its consular jurisdiction to include the Sahara, treating it as an integral part of Morocco’s national territory. This move reinforces Prague’s position across diplomatic, economic, and administrative dimensions.
Support for UN-Led Political Process
The Czech Republic also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), reiterating its view that Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal represents “the most appropriate, serious, credible and realistic basis” for achieving a sustainable and mutually acceptable political solution.
Both ministers reaffirmed their full support for the ongoing efforts of the United Nations, particularly the role of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara. They emphasized the importance of advancing the political process under UN auspices to reach a definitive resolution to the regional dispute.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
This joint declaration reflects a broader momentum in Czech-Moroccan relations, marked by growing political alignment and expanding economic cooperation. The visit by Foreign Minister Petr Macinka signals a renewed commitment to partnership, with both countries seeking to deepen collaboration across strategic sectors while contributing constructively to regional stability.
The Czech Republic’s clear endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy plan adds to increasing international backing for Rabat’s approach, further consolidating its position on the global diplomatic stage.
