Trump scores another victory against Haley in the Michigan primary

Former President Donald Trump , between 2017 and 2021, scored a new victory this Tuesday in the Republican party primaries, this time in the state of Michigan, by beating the former US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley.

According to the projections of several American media such as CNN and NBC, the former president met the forecasts and arrives even stronger for one of the key dates of the presidential race, ‘Super Tuesday’ on March 5.

Even so, the former governor of South Carolina stated in an interview with CNN, minutes after closing the polls, that she is not withdrawing from the race and that she will “absolutely” participate in ‘Super Tuesday’ since she has “a country that save”.

Trump arrives strong on ‘Super Tuesday’

The official counting of the votes has already begun and, with 10% counted, Trump has 64.6% of the votes and Haley 31.2%.
In numerical terms, today’s primaries have little representation.

And since the date of the state’s elections violates the rules of the Republican party, to avoid a sanction the Michigan Republicans will award only 16 of their 55 delegates according to this Tuesday’s results.

The remainder will be assigned at the party’s state convention on March 2, one more peculiarity of the complex primary calendar in the United States.

Haley is Trump’s only rival

Haley is Trump’s only remaining rival in the primaries and with today’s victory she scored a new defeat after losing last Saturday in her state, South Carolina.

The candidate then obtained 40% of the votes, a respectable figure that has allowed her to justify her permanence in the Republican elections.

However, he arrives with few possibilities on ‘Super Tuesday’, a day in which more than fifteen states are called to vote, including Texas and California.

More than a million voters

Michigan polling stations opened their doors at 07:00 local time (12:00 GMT) to celebrate the Republican and Democratic Party primaries, and were open until 20:00 local time (1:00 GMT on Wednesday). ).

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said Monday that more than a million people had already cast their ballots through the mail or in advance.

With the results of Michigan not added, Trump has 110 delegates of the 1,215 necessary to be mathematically named as his party’s candidate, something that will happen at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which will be held from July 15 to 18.

Trump, on track

Even so, everything seems to indicate that nothing can stop Trump, not even all the cases he has with justice, including four criminal trials for crimes such as the attempt to invalidate the elections, bribery, the retention of classified documents or the its relationship with the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

If everything goes as before and the Republicans continue to support him, on November 5 he will face President Joe Biden, who would be the Democratic candidate, at the polls.
