The Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, noted during his meeting with the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, that “China hopes to maintain more high-level exchanges with Spain,” and stressed that both countries must “show responsibility ” in this “convulsive international moment.”
“China is willing to work with Spain to open a new chapter in bilateral relations, but as long as they are based on cooperation, trust and mutual respect. As strategic partners and countries with international influence, we must show responsibility and inject stabilization into this turbulent world we find ourselves in,” Wang said.
China is committed to an EU with strategic independence
According to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry today, Wang also assured that Beijing considers the countries of the European Union as “an important force within a multipolar world” and that it hopes that the community bloc will commit to “strategic independence.”
“China and Europe have to strengthen cooperation so that there is no room for confrontation. The world is a global village, and all countries have intertwined interests,” Wang said during the meeting.
Furthermore, the foreign minister expressed China’s desire to “work with European countries to jointly safeguard the free trade system, practice multilateralism, promote equitable global multipolarization and universal and inclusive economic globalization.”

During his stay in Spain, Wang also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, and with King Felipe VI, before whom the Chinese diplomat assured that “the deep friendship between China and Spain remains unchanged despite the complexes and profound changes in the international panorama.”
“China and Spain have a long history, a diverse culture and an inclusive society, and share the same or similar views on many important issues.
China, a fundamental partner
“China is willing to work with Spain to promote dialogue and cooperation among all countries and to better address global challenges,” Wang said in the meeting with the king.
For his part, Sánchez affirmed after his meeting with the Foreign Minister that China is a fundamental partner for global peace and stability and, specifically, for seeking a solution to the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.
The Chief Executive reported on social networks that he exchanged views with Wang on the international situation and to enhance bilateral economic and cultural cooperation.
The Spanish Executive highlighted the good momentum of relations between the two countries, boosted by Sánchez’s visit to Beijing in March of last year, during which he met, among other authorities, with the country’s president, Xi Jinping.
Furthermore, the Spanish Government highlighted that the conversation between Wang and Sánchez discussed the need for bilateral relations to develop with balance and reciprocity.
Following the meeting between Albares and Wang last weekend in Córdoba (south), it was made public that China will lift the embargo on beef from Spain.
