TOKYO: North Korea fired two suspected ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan on Monday, Japan’s Defense Ministry said, raising fresh concerns over regional security. Initial assessments indicated that the missiles likely fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff also reported the launch of an unidentified projectile toward waters off North Korea’s eastern coast.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed relevant government agencies to make every effort to collect and analyze information, provide the public with timely and accurate updates, and ensure the safety of maritime navigation and airspace.

The latest launches follow another ballistic missile test conducted by North Korea on October 3, underscoring continued tensions surrounding Pyongyang’s missile development programme.

Following that launch, Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, described the weapon as an intermediate-range strategic missile capable of following an irregular flight trajectory, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The latest launches are expected to draw continued attention from Japan and South Korea as both countries monitor North Korea’s missile activities and their implications for regional stability.
