- iPhone Duo Brings Book-Style Foldable Design, Titanium Frame and Ultra-Thin Profile
CUPERTINO: Apple has unveiled its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, marking a major new chapter in the company’s iPhone lineup. The product was introduced during Apple’s latest launch event, which was broadcast live on the company’s website.
A Distinctive Book-Style Design
Unlike many foldable smartphones introduced in recent years, the iPhone Duo unfolds horizontally into a wide display, giving it a form factor more reminiscent of a book or passport than a conventional elongated smartphone.
When folded, the device features an asymmetrical profile, while its expanded form provides a significantly wider screen designed to offer a more immersive viewing and multitasking experience.
Apple’s leadership described the new device as having a more iPad-like experience, highlighting the company’s effort to combine the portability of an iPhone with the larger-screen functionality traditionally associated with its tablet lineup.
Apple’s Thinnest Smartphone
The iPhone Duo also represents a significant engineering achievement, being described as Apple’s thinnest smartphone to date.
The device features a titanium frame, adding a premium finish while supporting the structural requirements of a foldable design.
New Approach to Security and Controls
Apple has also adopted a different approach to biometric authentication on the foldable device. Unlike recent iPhone models that rely on Face ID, the iPhone Duo reportedly does not feature facial-recognition hardware.
Instead, the smartphone incorporates a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, providing users with an alternative method of secure authentication.
Because of the device’s wider display and redesigned form factor, Apple has also relocated several controls to the side of the smartphone to improve accessibility and usability.
A New Chapter for the iPhone
With its foldable display, ultra-thin construction, titanium frame and redesigned interface, the iPhone Duo represents a significant departure from Apple’s traditional smartphone design.
