ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has appointed veteran diplomat Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, currently serving as the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, as the new Foreign Secretary, marking a significant change in the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The appointment, first reported by Islamabad Post on September 6, comes at an important juncture for Pakistan as it seeks to strengthen diplomatic engagement and respond effectively to an increasingly complex regional and international environment. Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed brings decades of experience in Pakistan’s Foreign Service and has served in several key diplomatic and policy positions during his distinguished career.
In his role as Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, he played an active role in articulating Islamabad’s position on major international and regional issues, including Kashmir, counter-terrorism, peace and security, and multilateral diplomacy.

Reports indicate that she may subsequently take up another important diplomatic assignment as Pakistan’s Ambassador to Türkiye.
