- Prime Minister Mark Carney Vows Dollar-for-Dollar Response to New US Tariffs Affecting $20 Billion in Canadian Exports
OTTAWA: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on selected US imports following the collapse of trade negotiations with Washington and the introduction of new 50 percent tariffs by US President Donald Trump.
The latest US tariffs target a broad range of Canadian products, including furniture, dairy goods, cement, clothing, fishing equipment and hockey gear, covering approximately US$20 billion worth of Canadian exports to the United States.
Speaking at a press conference, Carney said Canada would respond on a dollar-for-dollar basis, emphasizing that the measures were intended to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses from the impact of Washington’s trade restrictions.
“We will respond in a measured and targeted way,” Carney said, stressing that the government would stand behind Canadian industries affected by the new US measures.
Support Measures for Affected Industries
Carney also announced that Ottawa would introduce a package of support measures for sectors and businesses expected to be adversely affected by the US tariffs.
The measures will accompany Canada’s new tariffs on selected imports from the United States, as Ottawa seeks to cushion the impact on domestic industries while increasing pressure on Washington to reconsider its trade policy.
The latest escalation marks a further deterioration in trade relations between the two neighbouring countries, whose economies are deeply integrated and heavily dependent on cross-border commerce.
