- 2,250 Participants Expected Across Multiple Categories as Abu Dhabi Builds Momentum Towards Hosting the 2028 Chess Olympiad
DUBAI: The UAE capital is set to welcome chess players from across the world as the 32nd Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival 2026 opens its competitions on Saturday, August 15, at the Radisson Blu Hotel Abu Dhabi.
The prestigious annual event will feature 763 players competing across four major tournaments, highlighting Abu Dhabi’s growing reputation as an international centre for sporting excellence and major global events.
A total of 112 players will compete in the International Masters Tournament, while the Open “A” Tournament will feature 152 participants. The Open “B” Tournament will attract 280 players, with a further 219 young competitors taking part in the Juniors Tournament.
UAE’s Growing Chess Community
The organising committee highlighted the strong participation of UAE players, with around 300 Emirati and UAE-based players expected to take part.
Overall participation across the festival’s various skill levels is projected to reach approximately 2,250 players, reflecting the growing popularity of chess in the UAE and the country’s commitment to developing the sport at both grassroots and elite levels.
The participation of local players will provide valuable opportunities to gain international experience, enhance competitive skills and engage with leading players from around the world.
Building Towards the 2028 Chess Olympiad
The festival also forms part of Abu Dhabi’s broader preparations to host the Chess Olympiad in 2028.
