NEW YORK: The United States is preparing to announce what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described as unprecedented economic measures aimed at further isolating Iran, with details expected to be unveiled next week.
Speaking to Newsmax, Bessent said the administration had significantly intensified its economic pressure campaign against Tehran at the direction of President Donald Trump.
“We went from Epic Fury to economic fury,” Bessent said, referring to the codename for the U.S. military operation against Iran. He added that the administration had since ordered an even greater escalation.
Washington Signals Unprecedented Economic Isolation
Bessent said the United States would introduce measures “like have never been seen in the history of economic isolation on a country,” but did not disclose specific details.
He indicated that the forthcoming steps would form part of a broader strategy designed to intensify pressure on Iran and restrict its ability to participate in international economic and financial activity.
Economic Pressure to Accompany Naval Blockade
The Treasury secretary said the new economic measures would be implemented alongside Washington’s naval blockade of Iran, signaling a coordinated effort combining financial and maritime pressure.
Bessent did not specify the scope, targets or timing of the proposed measures beyond saying that further announcements were expected next week.
The planned escalation comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran and reflects the Trump administration’s stated intention to significantly increase economic pressure on Iran.
