LONDON: A drone struck a US-owned gas storage tanker at Egypt’s Mediterranean port of Damietta, triggering a fire that spread to a second vessel, according to maritime security firm Ambrey and sources familiar with the incident.
Ambrey said its initial assessment indicated that the Energos Winter, a floating storage tanker, was hit by a drone. The resulting fire subsequently spread to another gas tanker, the Gaslog Salem, three trading sources familiar with the incident said.
Two separate security sources also attributed the blast to a drone strike.
Crew Evacuated as Fire Contained
The crew members were evacuated from the affected vessels, and the fire was brought under control, Ambrey said.
Port services company Inchcape separately reported that two gas tankers had caught fire at Damietta port, confirming the scale of the incident.
No Immediate Claim of Responsibility
No group or party had immediately claimed responsibility for the reported drone attack.
The incident comes amid heightened regional security concerns and renewed scrutiny of maritime infrastructure and commercial shipping in the Mediterranean and surrounding waters.
Authorities and maritime security agencies are expected to continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the origin of the drone and the intended target.
