- Sofia Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s 2007 Proposal Under Moroccan Sovereignty
RABAT: Bulgaria has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s position on the Moroccan Sahara, stating that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute a viable solution” to the long-running regional dispute.
The position was expressed in a communiqué issued following a telephone conversation on Tuesday between Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
Support Anchored in UN Security Council Resolution 2797
According to the communiqué, Bulgaria’s position takes into account United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, under which Sofia recognizes that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could provide a viable pathway toward resolving the dispute.
The Bulgarian government further reaffirmed its view that the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007 represents a serious, credible and realistic basis for achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political settlement of the Moroccan Sahara issue.
Growing International Support for Morocco’s Initiative
Bulgaria’s renewed position adds to the growing international momentum surrounding Morocco’s autonomy proposal and its sovereignty over the Sahara.
The Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, has emerged as a central element of Morocco’s diplomatic efforts to secure a political settlement based on autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
Morocco-Bulgaria Relations Gain Further Momentum
The latest development also reflects efforts by Rabat and Sofia to deepen their bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
Bulgaria’s reaffirmation is expected to further contribute to the expanding international support for Morocco’s autonomy plan and reinforce diplomatic momentum toward a political, realistic and lasting resolution of the Moroccan Sahara dispute.
