- Kyiv Expands Defense Cooperation with Washington as Demand Grows for Battle-Tested Ukrainian UAV Technology
KYIV: Ukraine has agreed to export domestically produced drones to the United States as part of the Pentagon’s Drone Dominance program, marking a significant step in defense cooperation between Kyiv and Washington, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday.
The agreement comes amid broader negotiations between the two countries on a comprehensive drone partnership, reflecting growing international interest in Ukraine’s battlefield-proven unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology developed during its war with Russia.
According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, six Ukrainian drone manufacturers have each received authorization to export approximately 100 drones to the United States for participation in the Pentagon-led initiative.
Neither the Ukrainian nor the US government has issued an official statement confirming the agreement.
Battlefield Experience Fuels Global Demand
Ukraine has emerged as a global leader in drone innovation after extensively deploying unmanned systems in combat against Russian forces. The performance of its UAVs has attracted interest from governments and defense organizations worldwide seeking to evaluate and adopt combat-tested drone technologies.
Kyiv has already concluded drone cooperation agreements with several European and Middle Eastern countries and has taken steps to ease wartime restrictions on defense exports. However, the government continues to maintain strict oversight of military equipment shipped abroad.
Pentagon’s Billion-Dollar Drone Competition
The Drone Dominance program is a multi-billion-dollar initiative launched by the US Department of Defense to accelerate the development of advanced small attack drones. The competition brings together manufacturers from around the world, with participants required to demonstrate the performance, resilience, and effectiveness of their systems under simulated battlefield conditions.
In the inaugural round of the competition, the winning drone was jointly developed by Ukrainian drone manufacturer Skyfall and British defense company Skycutter, underscoring the growing international recognition of Ukraine’s drone technology and defense manufacturing capabilities.
