- Leaders to Discuss Critical Minerals, Trade, Defense Cooperation and Potential Uranium Export Agreement
SYDNEY: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold high-level talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne on Thursday, with discussions expected to focus on strengthening cooperation in critical minerals, trade, defense, security, and other strategic sectors.
Modi, who last visited Australia in 2023, arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday evening to a ceremonial red-carpet welcome. During his visit, he is also scheduled to meet leading Australian business executives to explore opportunities for expanding economic and investment ties between the two countries.
Uranium Export Agreement May Mark Major Breakthrough
One of the key outcomes of the visit could be the finalization of a long-awaited agreement on Australian uranium exports to India, according to a report published Wednesday by the Australian Financial Review.
Although India and Australia signed a landmark civil nuclear cooperation agreement in 2014, uranium exports have remained limited due to safeguards ensuring that Australian nuclear fuel is used exclusively for peaceful purposes, including civilian energy production.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the bilateral meeting, Albanese hinted at significant announcements.
“I’ll have more to say about that with Prime Minister Modi,” he said when asked about the possibility of a uranium export agreement.
“We’ve engaged constructively, and I look forward to making a range of announcements together.”
Growing Economic and Strategic Partnership
India has emerged as Australia’s fifth-largest trading partner, following China, Japan, the United States, and South Korea. The relationship is further strengthened by Australia’s vibrant Indian diaspora, with nearly one million Australians claiming Indian heritage.
The two countries have significantly expanded cooperation in recent years across trade, investment, defense, education, clean energy, and critical mineral supply chains as part of their broader Indo-Pacific strategic partnership.
Large Community Event Planned in Melbourne
Prime Minister Modi is also expected to address thousands of members of the Indian diaspora at one of Melbourne’s largest sporting venues on Thursday evening.
Australian authorities have tightened security around the stadium following reports of planned protests, according to local media.
Known for drawing massive crowds during overseas visits, Modi has previously addressed packed stadiums in the United Kingdom, the United States, and several other countries with large Indian expatriate communities. During his previous visit to Australia, thousands of supporters gathered to welcome him at a major indoor arena in Sydney.
Regional Diplomatic Tour Continues
Australia is the second stop on Modi’s regional diplomatic tour following his visit to Indonesia, where he signed several agreements covering agriculture, defense cooperation, and the BrahMos cruise missile system.
After concluding his engagements in Australia, the Indian Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to New Zealand on Friday before returning to India, continuing his efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.
