LONDON: Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman and British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met in London on Thursday to discuss regional developments in the Middle East and reaffirm the longstanding strategic partnership between their two countries.

According to the Oman News Agency, the talks focused on supporting diplomatic initiatives and negotiations aimed at ensuring the safety and security of maritime navigation through the Gulf’s vital waterways, a key concern amid continuing regional tensions.

The two leaders also reviewed major regional issues, with particular emphasis on the Iranian nuclear file. They agreed on the importance of achieving a sustainable agreement that preserves regional stability, strengthens security, and promotes peaceful coexistence among neighboring states.

The discussions come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts following last month’s memorandum of understanding signed by the United States and Iran to de-escalate hostilities and launch negotiations on critical matters, including Tehran’s nuclear program and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The conflict, which began on February 28, has fueled instability across the region for more than 100 days.

Oman has played a significant mediating role during the crisis, hosting talks between Iranian and American officials in Muscat in an effort to reduce tensions shortly before the outbreak of hostilities. The Sultanate was also among several Middle Eastern countries affected by the wider repercussions of the confrontation involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

The meeting at 10 Downing Street underscored the close historical and diplomatic ties between Oman and the United Kingdom, as both nations reaffirmed their commitment to dialogue, regional security, and international cooperation.

The Omani delegation included Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi and Oman’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Badr bin Mohammed Al-Manthri.

The British side was represented by National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell and the UK Ambassador to Oman, Liane Saunders.
