WASHINGTON: Lebanese and Israeli delegations are currently discussing a US-drafted memorandum of intent on security issues during ongoing negotiations in Washington, a US State Department official told Al Hadath television.

According to the official, despite persistent differences between the two sides, there is a possibility that the document could be signed following the conclusion of the fifth round of talks.

“Despite differences, the two sides may sign this document following the fifth round of talks that should be over soon,” the official said.

Israel Signals Potential Troop Withdrawal as Goodwill Measure

As part of a confidence-building initiative, Israel is expected to withdraw its forces from a designated area in southern Lebanon that remains under its control.

The US official noted that a pilot zone would subsequently be established for the deployment of Lebanese army units in the area. However, the precise locations from which Israeli troops would withdraw have not yet been finalized.

“The sides have not yet specified the exact locations from which the Israeli troops will be withdrawn,” the official added.

Lebanese Army Expected to Ensure Stability in Pilot Zone

Under the proposed arrangement, the Lebanese Armed Forces will be required to demonstrate their ability to maintain security and prevent any potential activities by Hezbollah within the designated zone.

The framework also envisages the complete withdrawal of Hezbollah fighters from areas south of the Litani River, a longstanding objective of international efforts aimed at strengthening stability along the Lebanon-Israel border.

The discussions in Washington form part of broader diplomatic efforts, led by the United States, to reduce tensions and establish sustainable security mechanisms in southern Lebanon.
