RABAT – The Moroccan national football team has received a major boost ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after highly rated Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi officially committed his international future to Morocco following FIFA approval of his sporting nationality switch.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation announced on Friday that FIFA’s Players’ Status Chamber had approved its request to authorize Bouaddi’s change of allegiance, making the 18-year-old immediately eligible to represent the Atlas Lions in all international competitions.

Born in France to Moroccan parents, Bouaddi previously represented France at youth level and most recently captained the French Under-21 side during a European Championship qualifier against Luxembourg. However, the talented midfielder has now chosen to dedicate his senior international career to Morocco, underlining the growing global appeal and competitiveness of the North African football powerhouse.

Widely regarded as one of the most promising young players in Ligue 1, Bouaddi has rapidly established himself as a key figure for Lille OSC despite his young age. Over the past three seasons, he has made more than 90 appearances across all competitions, showcasing maturity, technical quality, and tactical intelligence beyond his years.

Bouaddi also made history as the youngest player ever to appear in a European club competition match at just 16 years and three days old — a milestone that further highlighted his exceptional potential on the international stage.

Morocco’s successful recruitment of elite dual-nationality talent reflects the country’s growing stature in global football and the long-term vision of its football federation. In recent months, the Atlas Lions have also secured commitments from players such as Issa Diop of Fulham F.C. and Rayane Bounida of Ajax Amsterdam, strengthening an already impressive squad ahead of future international competitions.

Morocco continues to build on the historic success achieved at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where the Atlas Lions became the first African and Arab nation to reach the semifinals of the tournament, earning worldwide admiration for their performances and elevating Moroccan football to new heights.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, will provide another opportunity for Morocco to showcase its rising football project on the global stage. The Atlas Lions have been drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Haiti, and Scotland in what promises to be one of the tournament’s most competitive groups.
