- Authorities Urge Fans to Celebrate Responsibly as Police Step Up Security Measures
PARIS: French authorities have called on football supporters to celebrate responsibly as France prepares to face African champions Morocco in a highly anticipated FIFA World Cup quarter-final on Thursday, with security forces placed on heightened alert following previous incidents of post-match unrest.
The match, scheduled to kick off at 10:00 p.m. local time (20:00 GMT), is expected to attract widespread public interest across France, where a large Moroccan community and deep sporting ties between the two nations add to the significance of the encounter.
A Match Shaped by Shared History and Strong Cultural Links
France and Morocco share longstanding historical, cultural, and social connections dating back to Morocco’s independence from French rule in 1956. Today, France is home to hundreds of thousands of people of Moroccan origin, while many French citizens also have Moroccan heritage.
The close relationship is reflected on the football pitch, with several Moroccan national team players born in France and currently playing for French clubs. Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi, although born in Spain, represents French champions Paris Saint-Germain, underscoring the strong footballing links between the two countries.
Government Calls for Responsible Celebrations
French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari appealed to supporters of both teams to ensure the occasion remains a celebration of sport.
“I appeal to everyone’s sense of responsibility. It has to remain a celebration,” Ferrari told France Info.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez also issued a firm warning, stressing that authorities would adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward violence, vandalism, or public disorder.
“No misconduct will be tolerated,” Nunez said.
Security Tightened Following Previous Incidents
Law enforcement agencies will deploy enhanced security measures across major French cities to prevent potential disturbances before and after the match.
The precautions come after significant unrest followed Paris Saint-Germain’s victory over Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League final on May 30, when more than 280 people were arrested in Paris amid clashes, property damage, and public disorder.
Authorities are determined to prevent a repeat of those incidents and have urged supporters to enjoy the match peacefully, emphasizing that football should unite communities rather than divide them.
Spirit of Competition and Mutual Respect
The last major World Cup meeting between France and Morocco came in the 2022 semi-finals, where France secured victory in a match that was followed by largely peaceful celebrations.
As the two footballing nations prepare to meet again on the world stage, officials hope the quarter-final will showcase the spirit of sportsmanship, mutual respect, and the enduring cultural ties that connect France and Morocco, while ensuring the safety of fans and local communities.
