US Weighs Expanded Maritime Strike Options Around Strait of Hormuz: CNN Report

Strait of Hormuz

  • New Strategy Focuses on Strategic Waterways and Iranian Naval Assets

Islamabad – The United States military is reportedly developing contingency plans for potential strikes on Iranian-linked targets in and around the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by CNN. The proposed strategy would mark a shift toward operations concentrated on one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.

Sources cited in the report said potential targets could include Iranian mine-laying vessels, fast attack craft, and other naval assets considered capable of disrupting regional shipping lanes and energy flows.

Wider Operational Zone Includes Gulf of Oman and Southern Gulf Waters

According to the report, US military planners are evaluating strike scenarios not only in the Strait of Hormuz, but also across the Gulf of Oman and the southern section of the Persian Gulf.

For much of the recent period of hostilities, US operations were reportedly focused on targets farther from the strait. However, the updated approach would place greater emphasis on safeguarding strategically vital waterways through direct pressure on maritime capabilities.

Dual-Use and Energy Infrastructure Also Under Consideration

Sources indicated that Washington may also consider strikes on dual-use facilities and selected energy infrastructure in an effort to increase pressure on Iran and encourage a return to diplomatic negotiations.

Such facilities are often viewed as strategically significant because they can support both civilian and military operations.

Possible Leadership-Focused Operations Discussed

Another scenario reportedly under discussion involves precision strikes targeting military commanders and officials viewed as opposing renewed negotiations between Tehran and Washington.

Among those mentioned in the report was Ahmad Vahidi, identified as commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Strait of Hormuz Remains Global Flashpoint

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically important waterways in the world, serving as a key route for global oil and gas shipments. Any military escalation in the area would likely have significant implications for international energy markets, maritime security, and regional stability.
