- From Mountain Peaks to Cultural Beats: Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day Shines in Islamabad
Islamabad – The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Islamabad proudly commemorated the 80th Anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence on Sunday morning, 17 August 2025, with a dignified and vibrant ceremony that highlighted the nation’s rich cultural heritage, resilience, and growing international partnerships.
The ceremony was led by H.E. Mr. Chandra Warsenanto Sukotjo, Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Indonesia to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Chandra reflected on the spirit of Indonesia’s independence, emphasizing national unity, patriotism, and Indonesia’s commitment to friendship and cooperation with global partners, especially Pakistan.

A special highlight of the event was the presence of the Guests of Honor—Major General (R) Mr. Asrobudi, Advisor to the Indonesia Big Wall Expedition (IBEX), and six heroic Indonesian climbers who had recently achieved the remarkable feat of scaling the Trango Tower in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan—one of the world’s most formidable vertical rock faces. Their triumph was not only a testament to Indonesian endurance and courage but also a powerful symbol of the enduring friendship between Indonesia and Pakistan.

The event drew a diverse crowd, including Indonesian Embassy officials, students, professionals, airline crew, UN and international organization staff, as well as members of the Indonesian diaspora in Pakistan. Many donned red and white attire or traditional Indonesian clothing, beautifully expressing the nation’s motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity), and their deep love for Indonesia.

Ambassador Chandra extended his heartfelt appreciation to all attendees:
“Your presence here today, especially on a Sunday, reflects the deep affection and commitment you carry for our beloved Indonesia. I am truly grateful for your participation. May the bonds between Indonesia and Pakistan continue to grow stronger. Pakistan-Indonesia Dosti Zindabad!”
The celebration was brought to life by an array of colorful cultural performances, showcasing Indonesia’s artistic and musical diversity. Highlights included traditional dances, multilingual songs, a captivating angklung ensemble, and a martial arts demonstration. Performers ranged from children and students to members of the Embassy’s Women’s Association and Pakistani friends of Indonesia, exemplifying cross-cultural harmony and cooperation.
A special moment during the event was the presentation of Certificates of Appreciation to Indonesian female community coordinators across several Pakistani cities. This recognition, in line with a national initiative by the President of Indonesia, honored their dedication to supporting fellow Indonesians abroad. Complementing this gesture, the Embassy, in collaboration with GAK Healthcare International, offered free health check-ups as a token of appreciation.
The IBEX Team was also formally recognized for their awe-inspiring achievement atop Trango Tower. Team Leader Freden Sembiring shared the emotional and challenging journey of the Red and White Trango Tower Expedition 2025, proudly stating:
“Reaching the summit was a dream come true. Despite challenges, including an injury along the way, we raised the Indonesian flag at 6,251 meters above sea level and unfurled banners commemorating our independence and the 75th anniversary of Indonesia-Pakistan diplomatic relations.”
Major General (R) Asrobudi shared visuals from the summit, drawing admiration and pride from the audience.
Ms. Rabia Raheel, CEO of Bia’s Interior Islamabad and a long-time friend of Indonesia, remarked:
“We are honored to be part of this celebration. Indonesia’s cultural richness and values of mutual respect are truly inspiring. We look forward to even stronger ties between our two brotherly nations.”
Guests were treated to an exquisite culinary journey through Indonesia, featuring an assortment of authentic archipelagic dishes and refreshing traditional beverages—an experience that captured the warmth and generosity of Indonesian hospitality.
The celebration concluded with a note of gratitude from Ambassador Chandra, who praised the efforts of the Embassy team, community leaders, and partners for their dedication in organizing such a successful and meaningful event.
“Together, we made this celebration not only possible but truly memorable. May the spirit of independence continue to unite and inspire us all,” he affirmed.
