Ecuador Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the Basis for Resolving Sahara Dispute

Rabat – The Republic of Ecuador reaffirmed on Friday its firm support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, describing it as “the basis” for resolving the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

This clear position was expressed by Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, during a press briefing following her meeting with Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, in Rabat.

Reiterating Ecuador’s alignment with the growing international consensus, Sommerfeld emphasized her country’s backing for Morocco’s efforts to reach a political solution that is realistic, pragmatic, lasting, and mutually acceptable, under the auspices of the United Nations.

In a significant move reflecting its principled stance, the Republic of Ecuador had previously withdrawn its recognition of the so-called “rasd (Polisario)” on October 22, 2024, and formally severed all relations with the fictitious entity.

Ecuador’s reaffirmation adds to the mounting international support for Morocco’s sovereignty and constructive engagement in finding a durable solution to the Sahara issue—one that upholds peace, security, and regional cooperation.
