Rabat – Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with the United Nations Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, on Monday in Rabat.
Their discussions took place as part of De Mistura’s regional tour, just weeks before the UN Security Council will hold informal consultations on the Western Sahara dispute in mid-April.
Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Omar Hilale, also attended the meeting.
The Moroccan delegation recalled the international momentum and support behind Morocco’s definite stance on its southern provinces.
The delegation also elevated King Mohammed VI’s call for the UN to take responsibility and recognize the clear contrast between Morocco’s realistic and legitimate approach in the Western Sahara and an outdated vision disconnected from global realities.
Speaking on the 49th anniversary of the Green March on November 6, 2024, the King reaffirmed Morocco’s sovereignty and historical right to the Sahara, noting that much of the international community now backs this stance.
Hinting at Algeria, the monarch lamented that a few countries remain attached to “outdated views” and are “stuck in past narratives” as they continue to oppose Morocco’s reclaiming of its southern provinces.
“Now is time for the United Nations to assume its responsibility and spell out the major difference between the real legitimate world – represented by Morocco in its Sahara – and a world which is frozen in time, and which is disconnected from reality and the developments that have taken place,” the King said.
In today’s meeting, Bourita reiterated Morocco’s full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his envoy.
The high-level delegation also stressed that any political solution must be realistic, pragmatic, and based exclusively on Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, in full respect of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
