KYIV – Ukraine has expressed its openness to expanding cooperation with Japan in the field of drones and unmanned systems, as Kyiv seeks to leverage its battlefield experience to strengthen both security and economic partnerships with key global allies.

In an exclusive interview, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Ukraine is prepared to share the expertise it has developed during its ongoing defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.

“We are ready to share with Japan our experience gained on the battlefield,” Sybiha said, emphasizing that Ukraine remains “open to interaction” depending on Japan’s level of readiness for such collaboration.

Japan Evaluates Ukrainian Drone Technology

The remarks follow reports that Japan is considering the introduction of Ukrainian-developed drones to enhance its defense capabilities. These systems have been refined under real combat conditions, making them particularly attractive as Japan reassesses its security posture.

Under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the Japanese government has been pursuing a more assertive defense policy, responding to what it describes as its most challenging security environment since the end of World War II.

Sources indicate that Tokyo is exploring the possibility of a bilateral arms transfer framework with Ukraine, which would include safeguards for sensitive technologies and information.

Expanding Ukraine’s Global Defense Partnerships

Discussions on drone cooperation reportedly gained momentum after Ukraine approached Japan. Kyiv has already established defense cooperation agreements with several Gulf nations, including the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, particularly in response to drone and missile threats.

Ukraine’s counter-drone capabilities have emerged as a key export of strategic value, reflecting lessons learned from ongoing conflict conditions.

Push for High-Level Diplomatic Engagement

Sybiha also highlighted Ukraine’s interest in strengthening diplomatic engagement with Japan at the highest level. Kyiv is seeking a potential meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Takaichi on the sidelines of the upcoming Group of Seven summit scheduled to take place in France this June.

He further indicated plans to visit Japan later this year to advance bilateral discussions.

Ukraine Warns Against Easing Pressure on Russia

Addressing broader geopolitical concerns, Sybiha cautioned against any relaxation of sanctions on Russia, particularly amid global economic uncertainties linked to disruptions in oil supply routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

“Now is not the right time to ease the pressure on Russia,” he stressed, warning that any such move would undermine peace efforts.

He underscored the decisive role of the United States in facilitating a resolution to the conflict, adding that sustained international pressure remains essential to advancing the peace process.

Strategic Alignment in a Shifting Security Landscape

Ukraine’s outreach to Japan reflects a broader effort to build strategic alliances beyond its traditional partners, while Japan’s interest signals a shift toward integrating combat-proven technologies into its defense framework. The evolving cooperation could mark a significant step in strengthening security ties between the two nations amid an increasingly complex global security environment.
