Former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) attended this Thursday in New York the wake of police officer Jonathan Diller, murdered on Tuesday in a traffic stop, and did not miss the opportunity to continue his campaign by criticizing crime in the city and affirm that we must “return to law and order.”
Trump’s visit coincides with Biden’s
The presence of the Republican candidate for the White House in New York, where he was born and had his main residence before moving to Florida, coincides with the visit of the president and Democratic candidate for re-election, Joe Biden.
Biden has a fundraising event this Thursday night in which he will have the support of former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton at Radio City Music Hall.
After learning of the officer’s death on Tuesday, Trump pointed out on his social network Truth Social that Guy Rivera, identified by the police as the person who allegedly shot him, “should never have been let back on the streets.”
According to authorities, Diller, who in his only three years on the police force had received four commendations, was with another officer when he walked up to a vehicle parked where he shouldn’t have been at a bus stop.
At that moment the passenger got out of the car and shot him in the torso, under the bulletproof vest. The other police officer responded and managed to wound the man, who identified himself as Guy Rivera.
Those involved in the case
Several charges were presented to Rivera this Thursday, including the death of the officer and possession of a weapon.
The driver, Lindy Jones, who was charged Wednesday with possession of a weapon, had been arrested 14 times on weapons charges.
According to local media, a spokesperson for the Trump campaign indicated that the former president was invited to the funeral. The White House noted that Biden called New York Mayor and former police captain Eric Adams to express his condolences.
“The president offered Mayor Adams, the city of New York and the Police Department his full support in the wake of the tragedy,” the White House reported.
Adams, who also attended the wake, told the press that he received Biden’s call and that he would convey his message to the family of Diller, who was married and the father of a one-year-old child.
