The Gambia Reaffirms Firm Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara, Endorses Autonomy Plan as the Sole Credible and Realistic Solution

Rabat – In a reaffirmation of its steadfast diplomatic stance, the Republic of The Gambia reiterated its full support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and endorsed the Autonomy Initiative as the only credible, serious, and realistic solution to the regional dispute.

This position was expressed in a joint communiqué issued following a high-level meeting in Rabat on Wednesday between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, Sering Modou Njie.

The Gambian Foreign Minister reaffirmed his country’s unwavering support for “the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire territory, including the Sahara region,” emphasizing The Gambia’s continued endorsement of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the most viable path to a peaceful resolution.

Minister Njie also hailed the growing international consensus surrounding the Autonomy Initiative, a momentum strongly propelled by the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. He further highlighted the historical significance of The Gambia being the first country to open a Consulate General in Dakhla in January 2020, symbolizing its early and resolute recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty in the region.

This renewed expression of support underscores the deepening ties between Morocco and The Gambia and reflects broader African and international backing for Morocco’s territorial integrity and constructive diplomatic approach.
