SEOUL : South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Thursday said he declared martial law last week to defend constitutional order while denying the charge he incited an insurrection.
Yoon’s televised address came as a probe continues into his short-lived martial law decree on Dec. 3 that has sparked widespread fury across the country.
The main opposition Democratic Party is expected to submit a new impeachment motion against him which will go to a vote on Saturday. The party’s first attempt at impeachment failed on Dec. 7 due to a lack of votes.
Criticizing the Democratic Party as “paralyzing state affairs,” Yoon said, “Whether I am impeached or investigated, I will fairly confront it.”
The South Korean Justice Ministry imposed a travel ban on Yoon while the investigation into the insurrection and other charges is ongoing.
The chief of South Korea’s corruption investigation body said Wednesday his office will seek to detain or arrest Yoon if the ongoing probe finds grounds to warrant it.
