Islamabad : Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouabhi says his side has the belief, talent, and mentality to make another historic impact at the FIFA World Cup, insisting the Atlas Lions can be “unstoppable” when performing at their highest level.

The African champions secured their place in the knockout stages on Monday after defeating the Netherlands in a thrilling penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey.

The victory showcased Morocco’s growing stature on the global stage, with the North African side controlling large portions of the contest and once again demonstrating the technical quality and resilience that have become hallmarks of their footballing identity.

Qatar 2022 Legacy Continues to Inspire a New Generation

Ouabhi believes Morocco’s remarkable run to the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar—the first by any African nation—fundamentally transformed the mindset of Moroccan football.

“The World Cup in Qatar changed the mentality of the Morocco team, and I’m well placed to speak about this,” Ouabhi said.

The coach, who guided Morocco to a memorable Under-20 World Cup triumph in Chile last year, said the success of recent years has strengthened confidence among players and supporters alike.

“Moroccan players believe in themselves, and the supporters believe in us as well. That is so important. The expectations are high, but that is because everyone knows how far this team is capable of going,” he said.

Atlas Lions Focused on Canada Challenge

Morocco will next face co-hosts Canada in the last 16, with a potential quarter-final showdown against France awaiting if they progress.

Despite his team’s impressive form, Ouabhi warned against underestimating their opponents, stressing that every match in the tournament presents a fresh challenge.

“We know it’s one game at a time. Some people think it will be easy for us or that it will be a walk in the park, but that is not the case. Canada will be a very difficult opponent,” he said.

‘No One Can Stop Us,’ Says Confident Moroccan Coach

Ouabhi believes his current squad has the potential to surpass even the achievements of the celebrated 2022 generation, provided they remain focused and play to their strengths.

“What we need to tell ourselves is that no one can stop us,” he said. “We are unstoppable when we play the football that we know how to play.”

At the same time, the coach emphasized the importance of humility and discipline.

“Nobody is unbeatable. I tell my players that as well. If we make mistakes, we will go home. We have to use every tool in our arsenal and push ourselves as far as possible. That is the mentality we want every Moroccan player to have.”

Morocco Earns Praise as African Football Continues to Rise

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman also acknowledged Morocco’s remarkable progress, describing the Atlas Lions as a reflection of the growing strength and sophistication of African football.

“It is very clear from this World Cup that African teams have improved greatly in tactical terms and in the way they approach matches,” Koeman said.

“Morocco consistently produces talented young players who continue to join Europe’s biggest clubs. There is a reason why they are ranked above the Netherlands.”

As Morocco’s golden generation continues to inspire a new wave of talent, the Atlas Lions are once again proving that African football is capable of competing with—and defeating—the world’s traditional powers.
