CAIRO: A desperate attempt to reach Europe ended in heartbreak after a crowded migrant boat carrying around 60 people, including women and children, capsized off the coast of eastern Libya, leaving at least 50 people dead or missing in one of the latest maritime tragedies in the Mediterranean.

Authorities said only 10 survivors managed to escape by swimming to nearby Bardaa Island, while rescue teams continue an urgent search for those still unaccounted for.

Rescue Efforts Continue Amid Fading Hope

According to the Coast Guard in eastern Libya, the vessel sank on Tuesday near Bardaa Island, off the coastal city of Tobruk, a region frequently used by migrant smugglers launching dangerous sea crossings toward Europe.

Officials said the survivors reached the island after battling rough waters, but hopes of finding more people alive continue to diminish as search and rescue operations press on.

The tragedy has once again exposed the immense dangers faced by thousands of migrants risking everything in pursuit of safety and a better future.

Libya Remains a Major Gateway for Desperate Migrants

Libya has long been one of the principal departure points for migrants and refugees attempting the perilous Mediterranean crossing to Europe.

Since the country descended into instability following the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that overthrew longtime leader Muammar Qaddafi, criminal smuggling networks have flourished, exploiting vulnerable people fleeing conflict, persecution and extreme poverty across Africa and the Middle East.

Migrants are frequently forced onto overcrowded, poorly maintained and unseaworthy boats, turning the Mediterranean into one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.

Another Deadly Shipwreck in a Growing Humanitarian Crisis

The latest disaster comes just one month after another shipwreck off eastern Libya, in which 51 migrants were reported dead or missing, highlighting the continuing humanitarian crisis unfolding in the central Mediterranean.

Despite repeated warnings from international organizations, desperate families continue to entrust their lives to smugglers, often with devastating consequences.

Hundreds Continue to Lose Their Lives at Sea

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 800 migrants were reported dead or missing along the Central Mediterranean route between January 1 and May 16 this year alone.

The organization recorded more than 1,300 deaths and disappearances on the same route last year, underscoring the Mediterranean’s grim reputation as the world’s most lethal migration corridor.

As rescue teams continue searching the waters off Libya, the latest shipwreck serves as another painful reminder of the immense human cost of irregular migration and the urgent need for international efforts to address the root causes driving thousands to risk their lives at sea.
