Kazakhstan Champions Democracy: Global Referendum Reaches 54 Nations Amid Uncompromising Commitment to Citizen Safety

  • Astana Demonstrates Maturity on the World Stage—Opening 71 Polling Stations Across the Globe While Prioritizing Voter Security in Volatile Regions

ASTANA — In a powerful demonstration of its commitment to democratic principles and its growing global footprint, Kazakhstan is set to operate 71 polling stations across 54 countries for the upcoming national referendum. This ambitious logistical undertaking underscores the nation’s dedication to ensuring every citizen’s voice is heard, regardless of where they reside.

The announcement was made by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Yerlan Zhetybayev during a March 10 briefing, where he detailed the extensive preparations underway to facilitate voting for Kazakh citizens abroad.

A Delicate Balance: Democratic Access and Voter Safety

In a move that reflects Kazakhstan’s status as a responsible and mature member of the international community, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established a dedicated headquarters to coordinate the complex logistics of the global vote. While expanding access for the majority of voters, Kazakh authorities have also demonstrated a principled commitment to the safety and security of its citizens.

Due to the heightened military-political tensions in the Middle East and persistent security concerns in Ukraine and Ethiopia, authorities have made the difficult but necessary decision to temporarily suspend operations at 11 polling stations across 10 countries.

Voting locations at Kazakhstan’s embassies in the following nations will not operate:

  • Middle East: Iran, Israel, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, Lebanon, and Kuwait
  • Conflict Zones: Ukraine and Ethiopia
  • The Consulate General of Kazakhstan in Dubai will also remain closed for voting

This prudent decision highlights Kazakhstan’s unwavering priority: ensuring that no Kazakh citizen is placed in harm’s way to exercise their democratic right. It is a testament to a government that values the lives of its people above political expediency.

A Global Diaspora Ready to Participate

Despite these regional suspensions, the reach of Kazakhstan’s democracy remains vast. An estimated 14,230 Kazakh citizens residing abroad are expected to be eligible to cast their ballots, connecting the nation from the corridors of Astana to the homes of its diaspora spread across five continents.

The World Watches: Record International Interest

The upcoming referendum has captured the attention of the global community, serving as a barometer of Kazakhstan’s continued democratic development under its progressive foreign policy. The international presence slated to observe the vote is a clear indication of the world’s confidence in Kazakhstan’s electoral integrity.

Observers expect a significant international contingent, including:

  • 336 international observers from 10 prominent international and regional organizations
  • Delegations from 27 foreign Central Election Commissions
  • Members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Kazakhstan

Furthermore, the referendum is poised to be one of the most widely covered events in the region, with 185 representatives from 68 foreign media outlets across 31 countries expected to provide coverage.
